Pearl Beach Lagoon Management Plan

A community forum was held on Saturday 19 May about the Lagoon Management Plan.

It was a fantastic turn out of residents from all areas of Pearl Beach not just those directly abutting the Lagoon – as it should be as the Lagoon is a community asset that is pivotal to the health of the Pearl Beach environment.

Since urban development the habitat value of Pearl Beach Lagoon has declined. This is in response to pressures such as urban runoff, modifications to the natural movement of water and weed invasion. These issues are likely to be exacerbated into the future as a result of population increase, climate change impacts and projected rises in mean sea level as well as the cumulative effects of past practices.??

The wetland condition and its preservation is of concern to Council and the residents of Pearl Beach. Council, in conjunction with NSW Department of Environment & Heritage, is looking to develop a Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) to assess the health of Pearl Beach Lagoon, engage the local community in contributing to the management process and identify management options based upon sound scientific research.??

The website for the Pearl Beach Lagoon Forum is now on the web. This will give you access for any comments, updates and feedback. Just go to http://haveyoursaygosford.com.au/pearlbeachlagoon.

Bushcare Update

Current happenings

The June meeting of Bushcare is scheduled for Saturday 2nd at North Coral Crescent with morning tea to follow on site. Members should wear long sleeves, hats, safety goggles and strong boots/shoes. We will be focussing on asparagus fern, bitou and any other weed that our Council Officers or site supervisor note. We will not be extending very far along the coastal track for safety sake.

However, to follow up on our last meeting, Ann, Janet and William will meet at the Coral Crescent entry to the Lagoon to review Casuarinae that may need to be replaced and to do some watering and some weeding at their discretion.

Any queries please call me on 0448 751595

Beach Lagoon Community Forum

INVITATION

To attend a Community Forum on the Pearl Beach Lagoon

When: Saturday 19 May
Time: 2-4pm
Where: Pearl Beach Memorial Hall

The Pearl Beach Lagoon remains hidden to many people but it is a pivotal part ofthe environmental balance for Pearl Beach. Unfortunately years of misunderstanding and abuse of the Lagoon and its surrounds threatens its long-term survival.

We are delighted that there is a to be proper Management Plan developed for the Lagoon. This will be an extensive process and will form the basis for all future action around the Lagoon. It means action can be based on fact not opinion or emotions.

The Management Plan is an initiative of the Gosford Council and is to be prepared by BMT WBM over the next 10 months. It has the support of the Pearl Beach Progress Association and Pearl Beach Bushcare. It is essential that all members of the Community get involved to get this right.
