This is also a timely reminder to the community for parents to discuss the message ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ with their children. This includes:

* Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times.
* Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.
* Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.
* Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.
* Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop.
* If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.
* If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know.

Easter Book Fair 2013

BARGAINS GALORE AT THE PEARL BEACH
EASTER SATURDAY MONSTER BOOK FAIR

9am – 5pm * Saturday 30th March 2013
Memorial Hall

Be early, don’t miss out as avid readers gear up for the annual Pearl Beach Easter Saturday Book Fair.

Origins of the book fair were to raise much needed funds toward the upkeep of the native Arboretum with a table of books outside the local shop. Once the Arboretum received a large bequest organiser Bill Abbott, and his Mother, Dorothy continued with the concept. Over the years book donations increased to such a degree that they moved into the Memorial Hall.

Now in its 37th year, the event is the largest Pearl Beach fundraising activity with proceeds going toward the memorial hall repairs and upkeep.

This year the event is no exception with thousands of books waiting to be snapped up. The festival atmosphere provides the perfect environment to search out that special book bargain. Titles will include reference, children’s, educational, cooking, gardening, business, art, travel and hundreds of novels. Also for sale at attractive prices will be unusual collectables and bric-a-brac.

The traditional homemade cake stall is always a sell-out and will once again provide that special treat, so come early to avoid disappointment.

Back by popular demand is Pim’s café which will be available for refreshments and lunch.

Resident Honored by Rolls Royce UK

At a recent luncheon held at Crowne Plaza Terrigal, Pearl Beach resident, Mr Les Freeman was honored with a recognition award by Rolls–Royce Aero Engine Controls to acknowledge his design contribution to the development of the jet engine between 1942 and 1948. Presented by UK Managing Director Mr Chris Weir.

The award immersed in a resin mould contained a smaller version of the jet engine part that Les Freeman designed.

Born in 1915 in Coventry, UK Les grew up in a happy family environment. With brother Frank they spent many enjoyable times roaming, camping and exploring the countryside. Then in the early thirties Frank purchased an old motorbike. The boys stripped it down and so began Les’s love affair with engines.

Having discovered the pleasures of an engine to do all of the work, the boys realised that a small car would give better weather protection for their outings. They continued to upgrade their cars and joined Riley Cars Limited where they gained invaluable experience.

Les then joined SS Cars later to become Jaguar Cars as a design draftsman. When the Second World War came the family moved from Coventry into a safer area, and Les began working at the Armstrong Whitworth Aerofactory.

IN 1941 Les joined Lucas Company and began working on the new jet engine with designs for other parts of the engine fuel system. Secrecy surrounded the work, and Les continued modifying designs and facing the many challenges being presented. At the end of the war travelling extensively Les continued to work on the development of new engines and components.

In 1949 Les visited Australia for Lucas and quickly fell in love with the country and the environment. Marrying a New Zealander who he met on his many travels they settled in Sydney as Les continued with his illustrious career. More recent engineering projects that Les has worked on were – the lifting system to raise the main bobbin on the Centre Point Tower construction, the Favco Crane in Hoxton Park, World Trade Centre, New York and the equipment to help move the radio telescope dishes at Parkes.

Les and his wife Erina moved to Pearl Beach in 1996 to retire and enjoy the environment, swim in the ocean and listen to the birds. Both Les and Erina are involved in community activities and enjoy their large family and their friends who come to visit.

Proceeds from Monstore to benefit Charity

Central Coast charities benefit from the recent
Pearl Beach ‘Wardrobe Winners’ new and as-new clothing sale

The recent extremely successful weekend clothing sale – “Wardrobe Winners” attracted capacity crowds over two days and packed the Memorial Hall looking for bargains or that something special.

After expenses the exciting event raised over $8,000 and two Central Coast charities, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Central Coast Support Group and Central Coast Grandparents Support Services will each receive a donation of $2,000 from proceeds of the weekend sale.

Roger Murray, President of the Pearl Beach Progress Association said, “the chosen charities reflect the diversity of financial and in-kind support that is provided by a number of Central Coast charitable organisations. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT offer free services to enhance the quality of life of people who are blind or vision impaired by assisting in their achievement of independence through access and mobility.

The Central Coast – Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program, provides support to the growing number of grandparents who find themselves faced with taking on the parental responsibility of their grandchildren. On behalf of the Pearl Beach Progress Association we are delighted to make a financial donation to these charities”.

He continues, “in addition, acknowledgement must be made to the Central Coast Salvation Army who generously loaned clothing racks and provided professional advice. A significant donation of un-sold clothing has been given to them for distribution to those in need, and for sale in their outlets”.

The remaining funds from the weekend will go toward the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall maintenance and upkeep. The event as a fundraising activity was supported by the Pearl Beach Progress Association, who would like to thank members of the community who generously volunteered to set-up and support the event. Not least, recognition must be made to the bargain hunters who came in their hundreds searching for that something special.
