The inaugural Pearl Beach Kids Club was held in January 2011, and following that success the Pearl Beach Progress Association once again presented an exciting series of activities throughout January 2012 school holidays. Events included weekly Yoga for Kids conducted by Helen Macnair & Benjamin Haynes, and a range of individual events including, Hop to Disco Magic with disco king Jamie Cartner; Summer by the Sea Art Workshop with renowned local artist Marijke Greenway; and a Walk on the Wildside in the Crommelin Native Arboretum.

Over 230 young people whose ages ranged from three to fifteen attended the events over the four week period with many of the events sold out. Parents were encouraged to come along and join in, and their feedback has been extremely encouraging.

A highlight of the Kids Club was a “Walk on the Wildside”in the unique flora and fauna bushland setting of the Pearl Beach Crommelin Native Arboretum. Over 100 residents and visitors, including 50 young people, ages ranging from Tiny Tots to Teens were escorted in small groups by Arboretum volunteers on a walking treasure hunt along small trails to identify indigenous and botanical species in the unique setting which is home to birds, insects and reptiles, who fly, slither and crawl.

As a special surprise, renowned Reptile and Amphibian expert, Mr Hal Cogger, whose qualifications include, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Honory of Science from the University of Sydney, and Peter Street from WIRES presented a live demonstration and hands-on experience with a variety of reptiles including a python, blue tongued lizard and a turtle.

Feedback from the participants was extremely positive as many of the children, and their parents had never experienced the Arboretum, or encountered hands-on interaction with live reptiles.

We look forward to presenting more Kids Club activities in the future.

The final meeting for 2011 was held at North Coral Crescent on Saturday 10th December focussing on eradication of Bitou and Asparagus Fern and sundry other weeds. In fact we did not quite get our work finished despite the hard work of the 9 people attending, leaving the Bitou to next year. We also did some tentative identification of a Bitou look-alike that is a native and put off pulling out ‘Cassia’ until we can confirm the identification.

Subject to consultation with Council, the restart for 2012 will be on Saturday 3 March at the Lagoon, meeting at the easement next to 65 Diamond Rd. I have proposed to Council that 4 people including a qualified poisoner, be assigned to North Coral Crescent to finish off the Bitou and the remaining Asparagus Fern (not that the job will be finished for ever). The survivors from North Coral Crescent will repair to the Lagoon for morning tea.

I have also registered as Coordinator for Clean Up Australia on Sunday 4 March and look forward to Bushcare support for this activity.
