Current happenings and through to the end of the year:

A most successful working bee was held on the western side of Pearl Beach Lagoon on Saturday 4 September followed by a morning tea at Geoff and Nancy Miller’s, hosted by Ann Parsons. Roger Murray and his two daughters injected enthusiasm and energy into the weeding. Recognising our joint work with Dunecare, Faye Austin joined us for the morning and the group photo which will feature in the next Pearl Beach Bushcare Management Plan. Lynda Morrison and I later inspected Maslin site to discuss future possible approaches to lantana eradication.

The October working bee will be held on the 9th at the northern end of Coral Crescent, moved from our normal first Saturday by reason of the long weekend. We are making this a joint ‘bee’ with Dunecare. We plan to tackle some remedial weeding in the dune area adjacent to the path to the Beach. A morning tea will be hosted by Daphne Bayliss at 11:00 am.

The last Bushcare working bee will be held on Saturday 6th November at Green Point followed by the annual pizza event at his home. Thank you Bill!

There will also be a Bushcare Christmas Barbeque run by Council (time and date to be advised).

2 September, 2010

Pearl Beach art exhibition and sale, October long weekend

‘Tree’ Ladies of Pearl Beach

On October long weekend, at Pearl Beach Memorial Hall, artists Marijke Greenway, Pim Sarti and Robyn Bellamy will open the fourth of their popular biennial exhibitions, Showoffs 2010.

Central Coast is their passion and each artist, in her own style, paints its natural environment. Trees, so expressive of that landscape, are the essential theme of this year’s exhibition.

Marijke, Pim and Robyn are intrepid explorers of our region. Any time, and in all weathers, you may discover them, in front of their easels, capturing the light or the changing moods of water, sky and bush in oils and acrylics. The best of their new paintings are portrayed at Showoffs 2010,.

At Showoffs’ opening, a highlight will be a reading by Luke Whitington of poems that he has written in response to several of the paintings. Luke recently returned from many years in Europe where he wrote and was published widely.

For the opening event on Friday 1st October, doors open at 5pm. All are welcome.

Exhibition hours are 10am to 5pm, Saturday through Monday. Entry is free.

Pearl Beach Memorial Hall, 9 Diamond Road

MEDIA RELEASE
July 2010

UMINA POLICE CITIZENS YOUTH CLUB TO BENEFIT FROM
THE THIRD PEARL BEACH PROMS

The 2010 Pearl Beach Proms has become an annual fundraising event with proceeds being donated to the Umina PCYC. Although the term Promenade Concert is normally associated today with the series of concerts founded in 1895 by Robert Newman and conductor Henry Wood – a festival known today as the BBC Proms – the term originally referred to concerts in the pleasure gardens of London where the audience could stroll about while listening to the music.

* The term ‘promenade concert’ seems to have been first used in England in 1838. A number of fine musicians and conductors provided a variety of musical promenade concerts over the years. Many of the well-known conductors combined showmanship with outrageous behaviour. In fact, Beethoven conducted with a jewelled baton, and a pair of white gloves brought to him on a silver salver!

The Pearl Beach Proms are no different with their own well-known and flamboyant conductor, Christopher Bearman, Director of the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music who will lead the performers and engage the audience on a global musical journey.

Host for the evening, Dr. John Irvine, “promises an exciting journey commencing in the home of the modern Proms – Albert Hall, London, continuing through France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Latvia and finally coming home to Australia”. Dr Irvine then continues, “our performers are talented members of the local community who have given freely of their time to rehearse and put on an evening of fine music mingled with fun and audience participation”.

“This year we have an exciting addition to the Proms program with an item performed by members of the Pearl Beach Youth Theatre whose ages range from 5 to 15 years”, said Margaret Walklate, committee and cast member.

The concert is scheduled for Saturday, 11th September. Ticket cost is $15, and doors will open at 7pm and the show starts at 7:30. Wine and refreshments will be available to purchase before the show and during the 20 minute intermission.

“I would like to acknowledge the hard working committee, and people who once again, are committed to the cause and generously donated supplies and items to be raffled,” said Dr Irvine. “We are confident that the Pearl Beach hall will be filled to capacity so that we can continue to support our youth in need of redirection.”
