Bushcare Update

March 26th, 2012 by Andrew Frost

Current happenings

The scheduled meetings for February and March 2012 were washed out by reason of rain, rain rain!

We are now planning to start on Easter Saturday, 7 April, meeting at the beachside carpark at the end of Agate St. Council has advised that they will not be able to provide supervisory staff on this day. However, there is some useful work to be done, primarily along the edge of the Lagoon. It is proposed that we work from the seaward end of the pathway from Coral Crescent leading to the Lagoon. This work will be guided by the identification and assessment of weeds undertaken by Ann over the past several weeks.

Depending on numbers it is proposed that 4 people be assigned to North Coral Crescent to finish off the Bitou and the remaining Asparagus Fern (not that the job will be finished for ever). The task at North Coral Crescent is assessed as feasible without the use of poisons. We will inspect the Bitou before starting work. If the Bitou is not flowering very well and if it has milky substance on the underside of the leaves, we may not take it out as we have been informed that these attributes indicate the presence of a biological control agent, a moth. If these conditions are present, it is proposed to harvest some cuttings and rub them against Bitou bushes that are flowering further along the track to Umina.

No morning tea will be served at the end as it ‘expected’ that Bushcarers will repair to the Book Fair and partake of morning tea on the back verandah.

We have been sent a very important article on the impact of tick bites from our Bushcare Officer. I have distributed this article to Bushcarers but if there is wider interest please contact me.
