Bushcare Current Happenings

November 1st, 2011 by Andrew Frost

Current happenings

The last meeting for the year will be at Paul Landa Reserve as core site with outreach to the Pathway to the Pool and the BOOF site. This will be the first trial of working across more than two sites. We have selected sites in reasonable proximity not least because no-one wants to miss out on the traditional Pizza Party at Bill Abbott’s on Green Point Road.

Please note also that Council is hosting the Christmas Bushcare party on 26 November at Copacabana Surf Club. An invitation has been emailed to members direct from Council. RSVPs should go to Council on this one.

Hazard Reduction Burning Thursday Sept. 22 2011

September 20th, 2011 by Andrew Frost

Re: Hazard Reduction Burning — Brisbane Water National Park

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in conjunction with the NSW Rural Fire Service will be undertaking a hazard reduction burn in yout area on Thursday 22nd September 2011. Unsuitable weather conditions may postpone the work to a later date.

The controlled burn will be approximately 240 ha in size and is located In Brisbane Water National Park to the south of Patonga Drive and west of Pearl Beach township.

The work is part of the annual program approved by the Gosford Bush Fire Management Committee. The purpose of the burn will be to reduce fuel loads in order to protect property and assist with control of summer bush fires.
Please note, there will be varying degrees of smoke, ash and radiated heat generated from the fire. To reduce these impacts it is suggested that you consider:

• Closing all windows and doors to keep smoke out;
• Removing washing from clothes line;
• Protecting or removing items which may be affected by ash, smoke or radiant heat (e.g. outdoor furniture, fences, plastic items, plants, watering systems, pets etc.)
• Clearing accumulated leaf litter away from items such as dividing fences or retaining walls and to delineate your property boundary from the adjoining reserve;
• If smoke affects your personal health please consider ways to alleviate your situation.

Tracks and trails within and leading into the burn area will be closed until further notice.

We recognise that there may be some inconvenience caused by this activity, however, there will be considerable benefits in reducing the intensity of subsequent unplanned fires, protecting property and wildlife habitat. Your assistance in allowing access to the rear of your property if required, would be appreciated.

If you have any inquiries regarding this matter, please contact Ranger Laurie Pasco on (02) 4320 4200.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Henderson

Pearl Beach Bushcare Update

August 8th, 2011 by Andrew Frost

Bushcare Pearl Beach, with the support of Gosford City Council,works to maintain integrity of the flora on several agreed sites throughout Pearl Beach through a programme of eradication of weeds and plantings. We meet at 9.00am on the first Saturday of every month (other than January and February because of heat and safety concerns) at a designated site for a 2 hour Working Bee, often followed by a MORNING TEA. Tools and gloves are supplied but volunteers should bring water and sunscreen and a hat. Long trousers and long sleeves are recommended.

The site is usually selected one month in advance through consultation at the end of the Working Bees. We have a very active membership drawn from an extremely wide range of interests. Members are reminded or advised one week in advance of the next Working Bee through email or by the raising of the Bushcare sign on the community direction board at the corner of Pearl Beach Drive and Diamond Road. Working sessions are attended by a Council Bush Regeneration Officer or a qualified regeneration contractor.

The Coordinator is Stephen Parsons, 57 Diamond Road, Tel 43423943 or 0448751595. Official Bush Regeneration Registration forms are available from me on request. The benefits from joining Bushcare include receipt of advice of coming events such as plant identification nature walks (in Spring), early morning bird observation and botany workshops run or sponsored by Council.

We have end-of-season pizza and drinks in November and Council puts on a Christmas barbeque and other events at Kincumba Mountain.

Current happenings

We had 17 people at the August 6th meeting at Paul Landa Reserve. A pre-assessment by Council Officers and two of us provided the basis for assigning about 6 different tasks and to open up discussion on how to control Bitou Bush biologically. Small groups disappeared only to return for the Morning Tea at 1100 with a culinary treat from Suzie.

The Group used onsite fallen dead wood to block informal paths that had sprung up and to cover the scoured areas as a pro tem measure ahead of Council contracting for installation of ecologs, matting and the planting of Westringia. Weed pulling (African love grass) and removal of Polygala (juvenile and not so juvenile) were among the tasks. Headland teams pulled ‘Mother of Millions’ and the usual Asparagus Fern, Freesias and Turkey Rhubarb. This site is looking very healthy; but this won’t stop us coming back for the traditional November session.

The next meeting will be at 61 Diamond Road (an easement) with a view to working around the Lagoon. Coordinators in my absence will be Jane Borton and Malcolm Davison who both have an abiding interest in the health of the Lagoon.
